Spanish I - An introduction to Spanish for beginners, students will learn basic language skills. Students will practice pronunciation of simple phrases and sentences; will engage in oral discussion about topics that describe everyday situations at home, school, and work.
          Students will practice reading simple dialogues and short paragraphs. Students will learn how to engage in conversations, initiate and respond to simple statements and commands. The course will include greeting expressions, descriptions of people, situations, feelings, personal likes dislikes, events and things.
          The course will also put the language into use: shop/bargain, emergency situations, traveling, obtaining information, directions.
          The course will introduce students to the Spanish/Hispanic culture to learn about the political/ social and economical issues. Students will explore information by reading about the current events, holidays, food, tradition, art, music, and dance.
          Students will be encouraged to use the Internet to access information, to do research and use technology provided in the HS for their presentations to class. Students will be required to use and integrate their major into the learning of Spanish as a final project: through songs, dance, acting, creating power points games, animated games, or filming such as interviews in Spanish. Students will be required to present their final project to class at the end of the semester.
 
 
Spanish II - To further develop previously acquired basic language skills.
Students will be expected to read and comprehend short stories, articles of different topics, biographies, students will be able to answer comprehension questions, summarize the main idea. Students will engage in oral discussion about topics from current events of news paper.
          Students will access Spanish web sites such as CNN in Español, Yahoo Espana, Don Quijote, Spanish magazines. Students will learn past forms of verbs such as preterit, imperfect, present perfect tenses, future and conditional tenses.
          Students will be using Spanish only on their speaking and writing assignments, write dialogues in pairs or small groups and role play to practice speaking. Students will practice reading simple dialogues and short paragraphs. Students will learn how to engage in conversations, initiate and respond to simple statements and commands. The course will include greeting expressions, descriptions of people, situations, feelings, personal like dislikes, events and things.
          Students will use the Internet in their research and projects, and work on Power Point presentations of their choice, preferably a major related project.
